Village school Chewa
In Chewa, a small village in proximity to the provinces of Kunar and
Nangahar, we started building the "Lions Peace-School Chewa" in
December. The groundbreaking ceremony complete with the traditional
presentation of a corner stone plate took place on 3 December 2002.
The Afghan Minister for Education and the Governor of the Province
were special guests. On 11 September 2003 this school celebrated the
opening ceremony. The Governor of the Province, Haji DIN Muhammad,
the Secretary of education, Haji Renna, official representatives of
UNICEF, International Red Cross, Nanghahar government
representatives and many children were present. We chose the date of
September 11th for the opening ceremony of the new the peace school
Chewa on purpose. This day - two years after the terrorist attacks –
is therefore now also a symbol for peace and the reconstruction of
Afghanistan. Dr. Reinhard Eroes stressed this in its inaugural
address.
This school is sponsored by the Bavarian chapter of the Lions Club,
Germany
